SARATOVSKAYA 17

Saratovskaya 17 is a variety of soft winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) of medium maturity and medium height, developed at the Southern-Eastern Agriculture Research Institute. This variety belongs to the botanic variety Lutescens and is characterized by a cylindrical spike shape with even density of spikelets along the entire length. The grain is semi-elongated, large, with a weight of 1000 grains of about 42.7 g. The leaves are wide, non-hairy, and without a waxy coating during the stem elongation period. The vegetation period ranges from 273 to 311 days, ensuring medium maturity of the variety. Saratovskaya 17 is distinguished by increased winter hardiness and resistance to lodging, as well as drought resistance above average. The variety is moderately susceptible to brown rust, susceptible to solid bunt and snow mold, but tolerant to damage to the grain by the enzyme of the harmful mantis bug. In variety trials, it showed high yield, surpassing such standards as Myronovskaya 808 and Saratovskaya 90 by 1.2 and 2.8 c/ha, respectively. The average yield in recommended regions is about 28.8 c/ha. The variety is recommended for cultivation in the Northern right-bank and Northern left-bank zones of the Saratov region, as well as in the Middle-Volga and Lower-Volga regions. Saratovskaya 17 responds well to increased agro-fond and is distinguished by high grain quality: gluten and protein content in it is higher than standard varieties, and the quality of gluten is significantly better, which positively affects baking properties. Economic efficiency of the variety is achieved through stable production of high-quality grain, which makes it competitive and in demand in agriculture.
