Vetch OBSKAYA 16

Engineering the «Obskaya 16» Vetch Variety

The «Obskaya 16» spring vetch, developed by the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (SB RAS), represents a strategic selection focus on adaptability and phytosanitary resilience in grain legume production. The core technical advantage of this variety lies in its ability to maintain physiological stability under varying environmental pressures.

Phytosanitary Resilience and Crop Security

One of the primary technical solutions within the genetic makeup of «Obskaya 16» is its broad-spectrum resistance to major agricultural diseases. The variety has been bred to withstand root rots, leaf rust (Puccinia triticina), and powdery mildew. By mitigating the impact of these pathogens at the genetic level, the variety reduces the dependency on external fungicide inputs, preserving leaf area duration and maximizing grain fill potential.

Technical Specifications for Efficient Cultivation

• Growth Cycle: The 70–90 day vegetation period allows for flexible scheduling and consistent performance across diverse climatic zones.
• Morphological Structure: With a plant height of 80–120 cm, the variety provides a balanced architecture, facilitating efficient mechanical harvesting while maintaining high biomass and protein yields.

The work of breeders Petr and Antonina Goncharov has resulted in a crop that serves as a cornerstone for sustainable crop rotation. By combining high environmental plasticity with a robust health profile, «Obskaya 16» provides farmers with a predictable and reliable yield source for both forage and soil health improvement programs.
