Alfalfa Regina

Practical Guide to Growing Regina Alfalfa

When selecting an alfalfa variety, the main priority for an operator is balancing biomass yield with field manageability. The Regina variety is known for its predictable growth pattern, which simplifies equipment setup. With a plant height of 70–90 cm, it is perfectly suited for standard rotary mowers, allowing for clean cuts and minimal machine strain during harvesting.

Disease Resistance and Farm Efficiency

Regina stands out due to its genetic resilience, which significantly reduces the need for constant chemical treatment. For farm managers, this translates to lower input costs and fewer passes through the field. The variety features strong resistance to:

• Golden potato cyst nematode
• Potato wart
• Common scab

These features are crucial when integrating alfalfa into diverse crop rotations. By minimizing disease pressure, you ensure higher forage purity and long-term soil health without relying on intensive fungicide programs.

Operational Performance

Working with Regina is straightforward. The uniform growth allows for efficient mowing, ensuring that windrows remain consistent and easy to handle for forage harvesters or balers. Because the stems do not lignify too quickly, operators gain a vital buffer window of a few days to complete the harvest at peak protein concentration. The crop’s resistance to lodging also simplifies the collection process, allowing you to maintain higher ground speeds without sacrificing quality. Regina is essentially a reliable workhorse for any forage production system, forgiving in management and consistent in output.
