Vetch Ltava

A Reliable Tool for Soil Fertility Restoration

Vetch variety 'Ltava', developed by the Poltava State Agrarian Academy, is a staple for farms focused on sustainable agriculture and soil health. As a leguminous crop, it serves as an excellent green manure (siderate), designed to naturally enrich the soil with nitrogen and improve its structural composition without heavy reliance on synthetic inputs.

Practical Applications in Farming

The main strength of 'Ltava' lies in its rapid growth during the early spring season. Farmers choose this variety for specific tasks within their crop rotation cycles:

• Nitrogen Fixation: Effectively capturing atmospheric nitrogen to boost the soil's nutrient profile for subsequent crops.
• Weed Suppression: Its early and dense vegetative growth acts as a living mulch, shading out competitors and reducing the weed pressure.
• Soil Structure Improvement: The robust root system helps improve aeration and water infiltration, making it an ideal choice for compact or heavy soil types.

Cultivation Strategy

For best results, timing is essential. 'Ltava' should be sown in early spring to take advantage of available soil moisture. The most critical operational phase is the harvest timing: for optimal green manure effect, the crop must be incorporated into the soil during the budding phase. Harvesting at this stage ensures the plants are at their peak nutritional value while remaining soft enough for rapid microbial decomposition. This timing allows the organic matter to break down efficiently, providing a ready-to-use nitrogen source for the following cash crops, thereby optimizing the field's productivity in a cost-effective manner.
