Rybinskiy donnik is a herbaceous biennial plant of the legume family, valued as a cover crop and fodder for over two thousand years. It prefers wasteland, meadows, and fallow land, reaching a height of 0.5 to 2 meters. The leaves are trifoliate, and the terminal racemes bear small yellow or white flowers. The fruit is a naked pod 30–40 mm long, and seeds retain viability for up to fourteen years.
In agriculture, donnik is used to improve soil structure and enrich it with nitrogen thanks to its taproot. As a fodder plant, it is rich in vitamins and trace elements, making it a valuable source of nutrition for livestock. Additionally, donnik is widely used in the perfume and soap-making industries: aromatic honey with vanilla notes is obtained from the flowers, and essential oil is used as a fragrance.
The medicinal properties of donnik are confirmed by numerous studies. Its composition contains cimarin, tannins, flavonoids, ascorbic acid, carotene, and tocopherol, which provide anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiseptic, and wound-healing effects. Honey from donnik nectar is used for upper respiratory tract diseases, insomnia, hypertension, and to stimulate lactation. The plant also has expectorant, hypotensive, anticoagulant, and calming effects, making it a universal remedy in folk medicine.
