Sugar beet Traviata

Biological Protection: The Potential of the Traviata Hybrid

Syngenta's breeding strategy focuses on minimizing risks in intensive sugar beet farming, and the Traviata hybrid is a prime example of genetic resilience. This solution relies on a multi-level approach to protect sugar beet crops from aggressive pathogens capable of reducing yields by 30–50%.

Root Profile and Mechanics

The Traviata root is characterized by an oval-conical shape. This geometry is optimized to facilitate mechanical harvesting, minimizing damage while the crop passes through beet harvester components. Deep soil penetration, combined with a compact root system, ensures uniform root development and high-quality harvest consistency.

Resistance as an Economic Driver

• Rhizomania: A critical feature for regions with high necrotic yellow vein virus pressure. The hybrid maintains vascular system integrity even under significant infection loads.
• Cercospora: Genetic resistance reduces the necessity for intensive fungicide applications during peak vegetation, preventing premature senescence of the leaf canopy.
• Powdery Mildew: Inhibits mycelium development on leaf surfaces, which is essential for sustaining photosynthetic activity late in the growing season.

By investing in Syngenta’s genetics, growers can reallocate resources from disease control to optimizing plant nutrition and irrigation, ensuring consistent sugar yields per hectare even under challenging phytosanitary conditions.
