Sorghum BROWN 11

The Versatile "Korichnevoe 11" Sorghum: Balancing Grain Productivity and Feed Value

For farmers operating in high-risk agricultural regions with moisture deficits, choosing a sorghum variety often involves balancing grain yield with green mass quality. The "Korichnevoe 11" variety from the V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University offers a balanced solution for those seeking multi-purpose use of their planting areas.

Agronomic Profile

With a vegetation period of 100–110 days, this variety effectively utilizes available light and temperature resources, even in regions with moderately short summers. It demonstrates high adaptability to the challenging soil and climatic conditions typical of southern and steppe zones. The key feature of "Korichnevoe 11" is its versatility: the plant is equally effective for grain production and for creating high-quality feed bases (silage, hay).

Biochemical Grain Indicators

The grain color ranges from light to dark brown, a distinct visual characteristic of this breeding product. However, its true agronomic value lies in its chemical composition:

• High starch yield (70–80%): provides excellent nutritional energy for livestock and high efficiency in technical processing.
• Stable protein content (11–12%): helps balance cattle and poultry diets, reducing the need for expensive protein supplements.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The main advantage of "Korichnevoe 11" is its plasticity. Unlike highly specialized grain hybrids, this variety is resilient to minor agronomic errors and maintains acceptable biomass yields even if sowing windows are slightly missed. It is ideal for mixed-livestock farms that require a reliable silage source without sacrificing marketable grain yields.

A common trade-off for this type of sorghum is the necessity of strict temperature management during sowing—the soil must warm to at least 12-14°C. Slow early-stage growth can otherwise reduce the crop's competitiveness against weeds.

By selecting this variety, you are investing in reliable yields and multi-purpose utility, which is critical in today's volatile grain market.
