Potato variety Santé — this is a mid-early table variety developed by the Dutch breeding company Agrico B.A. It is characterized by high yield and good adaptability to various soil types and climatic conditions, making it suitable for cultivation in Ukraine, the middle belt, and southern regions of Russia. Tubers have oval or round shape, light yellow color, and weight from 90 to 120 grams. The starch content in tubers ranges from 10 to 14%, which affects their culinary properties — the potato does not easily soften, so it is more often used for preparing various dishes and salads, as well as for frying. The flesh of the tubers does not darken when cut, which is an additional advantage for culinary use.
Santé potato plants are large and spreading, forming no fewer than ten tubers per plant. During flowering, compact white flowers appear at the tops of the plants. The variety has good resistance to several diseases, particularly it was developed with increased resistance to late blight, although the foliage is still susceptible to this disease and vulnerable to common scab. Thanks to these qualities and high yield, reaching up to 570 centners per hectare, this variety is popular among farmers and gardeners.
For successful cultivation of Santé potato, proper care is essential, especially regular and sufficient watering, as the crop prefers moist soil. In industrial scale, it is recommended to use automatic irrigation with side-hole hoses, which ensures even moisture distribution and allows fertilizers to be added to the water. This approach contributes to obtaining stable and high yields. Overall, the Santé variety combines excellent taste qualities, high productivity, and adaptability, making it one of the most sought-after potato varieties for various regions.
