Agrotechnical Guidelines for Fleetwood Alfalfa

The Fleetwood alfalfa hybrid, introduced by Deutsche Saatveredelung AG in 2025, is designed for high-intensity forage production. Achieving its full yield potential requires strict adherence to specific agronomic practices, particularly during the establishment phase.

Sowing and Establishment

The optimal sowing window is early spring, once soil temperatures reach +5°C to +8°C. A seeding rate of 15–20 kg/ha is recommended. Precision in planting depth is vital: 1–2 cm in heavy soils and up to 3 cm in lighter soils. Post-sowing rolling is essential to ensure capillary moisture movement to the seeds, which is critical for uniform germination.

Soil Requirements and Management

Fleetwood thrives in soils with a pH of 6.5–7.5. Liming is mandatory on acidic soils to ensure proper root nodule development. The hybrid is sensitive to waterlogging; therefore, fields with a water table higher than 1.5 meters should be avoided. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be applied during primary tillage to support long-term stand productivity.

• Seedling Stage: Focus on weed control and monitoring for early-season pests.
• Budding Stage: This is the phase of rapid biomass accumulation. Adequate moisture is crucial here to maximize yield.
• Flowering Stage: The ideal time for the first cut to balance nutritional value (protein content) with the longevity of the stand.

To achieve 4–5 cuts per season, post-harvest fertilization is recommended. While Fleetwood exhibits strong resilience to environmental stress, supplemental irrigation significantly enhances regrowth rates in dry conditions, ensuring consistent forage quality throughout the growing season.
