This lucerne variety was developed through individual selection, by selecting the best plants from the variety NS Banat OMS II and foreign varieties Verko and Vertus. By this method of selection, a variety was obtained that is resistant to lodging, resistant to some diseases, and has increased leaf mass (improved quality) compared to NS Banat OMS II. Higher resistance to drought, low temperatures, and lodging.
Early variety with rapid growth (23.2 cm — 15 days after vernal equinox), possessing rapid regenerative ability after mowing (26.4 cm — 14 days after mowing). High regenerative speed after mowing, as well as drought and low temperature resistance (winter survival) are similar to NS Banat OMS II. Plant height at mowing period is 67 cm. Part of leaf mass in yield is 50%. Leaves are gray-green in color. Gray color due to waxy coating, indicating exceptional drought resistance. Flower color ranges from light to dark purple. Protein content: 20.1%. Light purple flower color predominates. Produces good yields on soils with light and medium-heavy mechanical composition. Banat VS matures 2-3 days later than NS Banat OMS II.
Based on the obtained results, the experimental variety was registered and planted for trials by the Commission for Variety Recognition of the Government of the Republic of Serbia in 2004-2005. It is a high-yielding variety with green mass yield of 85-100 t/ha and hay yield of 18-20 t/ha, tolerant to intensive use. Due to reduced sensitivity to lodging, it shows higher seed yield compared to all other NS lucerne varieties.
