Description
Lonicera 'Morena' – an early variety with large berries that quickly starts fruiting already by the first year after planting. The bushes are of medium height (up to 1.5 m high and up to 1.3 m wide) with an oval, sprawling crown, dense and evenly growing shoots, which makes the plant resistant and not prone to overcrowding. Due to high winter hardiness and low susceptibility to diseases and pests, 'Morena' is easily cultivated in various climatic conditions.
The fruits of this variety are distinguished by their large size – up to 4 cm in length and a weight from 1.2 g to 3.5 g. The berry has an elongated, urn-shaped form with a soft, slightly bumpy surface and a thin, dark-blue skin covered with a waxy coating. The flesh is sweet-and-sour, of dessert taste, while sweetness prevails over acidity. High sugar content and low amount of organic acids make the berries particularly pleasant to the taste.
'Morena' is characterized by early fruiting and stable yield: under favorable conditions, a bush can produce up to 5 kg of berries, and usually – from 1.5 to 2 kg. The berry hardly drops during ripening, which facilitates harvest collection, however it is easily shaken off if harvested manually. The fruits withstand transportation well and are kept fresh for about five days. To ensure cross-pollination, it is recommended to plant other varieties of lonicera nearby, such as 'Leningradskiy Velikan', 'Doch Velikana' or 'Bakcharskaya Yubileynaya'.
