Lettuce Anthony

Maximizing Iceberg Lettuce Yields with "Enthony"

For large-scale producers, selecting the right Iceberg lettuce variety is a balance between yield potential and risk management. "Enthony" by Rijk Zwaan is engineered to address the most critical challenges of commercial lettuce farming, combining high productivity with robust disease resistance.

Field Performance and Production Strategy

With a maturity period of 75–85 days, "Enthony" is an excellent choice for succession planting schemes. It consistently produces large, light-green heads, provided the planting density is managed between 80,000 and 110,000 plants per hectare. This density ensures that each head reaches its full weight potential while maintaining the structural integrity required for market-grade retail packaging.

Key Advantages for Professional Growers

• Advanced Resistance: The variety offers high resistance to Downy Mildew (Bremia lactucae), significantly reducing the need for intensive fungicide applications and lowering overall production costs.
• Internal Quality: One of "Enthony’s" standout features is its resistance to internal tipburn (necrotic spotting). For the grower, this translates to fewer rejections during grading and sorting, ensuring that the product arriving at the warehouse meets strict quality standards.
• Handling and Logistics: The variety is noted for its ability to withstand standard post-harvest logistics. Its compact head structure and resistance to internal physiological disorders make it a reliable performer for long-distance shipping.

When selecting "Enthony," farmers are not just buying seeds; they are investing in a consistent harvest cycle. By mitigating the risks of internal necrosis and fungal pressure, this variety allows growers to focus on field management and irrigation, confident that the crop will deliver the heavy, clean heads that the market demands.
