Lettuce Cavernet

Technological potential of the Kavernet hybrid

The breeding breakthrough by Rijk Zwaan in the Lollo Rossa lettuce segment has resulted in a hybrid that combines aggressive aesthetics with high field resistance. Kavernet is a solution for professional growers focused on stable market yields with minimal risks of pathogen damage.

Biological protection and physiology

The key value of the hybrid lies in its genetically encoded tolerance to critical threats. Under intensive growing conditions, the plant demonstrates stability against the following factors:

• Lettuce Mosaic Virus (LMV): Prevents leaf plate deformation and growth stagnation, which is critical for the visual appeal of the rosette.
• Internal Tipburn/Necrosis: A specific issue for intensely colored hybrids, causing tissue death inside the head. Kavernet eliminates this risk due to its balanced metabolism, ensuring a clean cut during processing.

Rosette architecture and visual characteristics

The intense red pigment is distributed across the entire leaf surface, including the basal area, making the produce visually appealing even at high planting densities. The large weight of the rosette allows for a reduction in the number of units per area without losing the total weight of the market batch. The leaf structure is dense with characteristic ruffles, which promotes good aeration within the plant and prevents moisture stagnation — the primary cause of rot.

Agronomic value

The Rijk Zwaan hybrid is justified for producers operating in the fresh market segment. A powerful root system ensures stable nutrition during periods of thermal stress, while high disease resistance allows for reduced pesticide application, making the final product more sustainable for retail.
