Tidjiel EA is a variety of common hazel (Corylus avellana), known for its high shade tolerance and ability to grow in various soils, from loams to sandy ground. The plant features lush crowns with large leaves that open in late March in the south and in May in the north. The hazel blooms early in spring, before the leaves appear, when golden staminate catkins up to 5 cm long emerge on the branches. These catkins can be solitary or gathered in groups of 2–4 and consist of four bifid stamens.
The hazel fruits are oval or spherical nuts, about 2 cm long, enclosed in a bell-shaped light green husk with a soft fuzz. Each infructescence usually contains 3 to 4 nuts, although sometimes as many as 30. The nuts reach a diameter of 13–15 mm and are colored in shades of light to dark brown. The variety has high yield: planting 600 bushes per hectare can yield about 900 kg of nuts, and one kilogram of product contains approximately 870 nuts.
Tidjiel EA is unpretentious regarding soil and climate – the plant is not afraid of wind, frost, and can grow in open areas as well as in living fences. Due to its durability and rich harvest, it is a popular choice for gardeners who want to obtain high-quality filberts and hazelnuts with minimal care costs.
