Hazelnut Shchelkunchik

Engineering Parameters of the Variety

The 'Shchelkunchik' hazelnut is a product of professional breeding efforts by the I.V. Michurin Federal Scientific Center. The core objective of this variety was to develop a high-yielding plant with a compact growth habit, which is essential for dense industrial planting schemes. Its genetic profile is specifically adapted to temperate climate conditions, exhibiting superior winter hardiness in generative buds.

Morphological Features and Productivity

• Growth Habit: The plant forms a medium-sized shrub with moderate density, facilitating mechanical pruning and efficient harvesting operations.
• Yield: The variety is noted for its consistent annual yields. The nuts are characterized by a thin shell, which simplifies post-harvest processing.
• Kernel Ratio: A vital technical metric is the kernel-to-shell ratio. 'Shchelkunchik' delivers an optimized percentage, reducing logistical and storage costs significantly.

Practical Production Value

The primary technical advantage of this hybrid lies in its ability to maintain high commodity quality during extended storage. A high oil content in the kernel makes it a preferred choice for the confectionery industry. Within a commercial orchard environment, the variety exhibits robust resistance to regional pathogens, allowing for a reduction in the pesticide load. Its adaptability to various soil types broadens the potential geographical range for cultivation, ensuring predictable gross yields when standard agronomic practices are followed.
