Buckwheat Astra

Agronomic Profile of the Astra Buckwheat Variety

Developed by the National Scientific Center 'Institute of Agriculture of the NAAS', the Astra buckwheat variety is designed for farmers who prioritize consistency and harvesting efficiency. As a determinate variety, it is engineered to overcome the common challenges associated with uneven ripening and crop lodging.

Field Performance and Management

• High Lodging Resistance: This is the standout feature of Astra. With a plant height of 90–100 cm, the sturdy stems provide excellent resistance to wind and heavy rains, ensuring the crop remains standing until harvest, which minimizes grain losses.
• Determinate Growth Habit: The uniform maturation process allows for a streamlined harvest schedule, facilitating better integration with other farming tasks, such as preparing the soil for winter crops.
• Optimal Plant Structure: With a compact plant size of 50–60 cm, the canopy is easier to manage during herbicide or nutrient applications, ensuring precise coverage and higher efficacy.

Practical Application for Farm Operations

Astra is highly recommended for operations requiring a reliable, high-yield crop that performs well under both intensive and moderate management regimes. Because of its superior lodging resistance, it is a preferred choice for regions prone to stormy weather. Farmers choosing Astra can count on a predictable growing cycle—starting from quick emergence through to synchronized flowering and a stress-free harvesting period, as the crop structure is optimized for high-speed mechanical combine operation without the risk of plant entanglement.
