Working with Eskyz peas

For an agronomist working with legumes, the Eskyz variety from the Yuriev Institute of Plant Production is all about field predictability and stable yields. This Ukrainian-bred variety is engineered for producers tired of harvest losses caused by lodging. The semi-leafless (tendril) plant type ensures excellent stem rigidity; the plants interlock, creating a sturdy canopy that remains standing even after heavy rainfall.

Operational efficiency and harvesting

The main advantage for the combine operator is its exceptional suitability for direct harvesting. Due to the lack of excess leaf mass and uniform maturation, the header moves smoothly without clogging, and harvest losses at the cutter bar are minimized. The 60–80 cm plant height is ideal for modern combine headers, allowing for efficient operation at optimal speeds without the risk of missing the bottom pod layer.

Agronomic resilience and key stats

• Crop health: The variety shows high natural tolerance to root rot, fusarium wilt, and ascochyta blight. In practice, this means significant savings on fungicide treatments, as the plant can withstand pathogen pressure on its own.
• Vegetation: A 70–85 day growth cycle makes it highly flexible for crop rotation, ensuring the harvest window is closed before extreme heat or persistent autumn rains set in.
• Grain quality: Large seed size (1000-seed weight of 240–270 g) combined with a protein content of 22–25% makes Eskyz a high-liquidity commodity, widely accepted by grain elevators for both food-grade and feed-grade markets.

If you are looking for a crop that requires minimal maintenance during harvest and offers high stress resistance in Ukrainian climate conditions, Eskyz proves itself to be a technologically reliable and efficient choice.
