The spring barley variety Josefin is distinguished by high resistance to major diseases prevalent in the central forest-steppe zone of Ukraine, such as powdery mildew, net blotch, and dark brown spot. Due to the presence of recessive mlo genes, this variety exhibits a low level of powdery mildew infection, not exceeding 3.5%, which confirms its high immune protection and makes it a valuable material for breeding for pathogen resistance.
Immunological monitoring showed that Josefin belongs to the group of donors of resistance to the powdery mildew pathogen, enabling its use in breeding programs to enhance barley immunity. The variety also possesses comprehensive resistance to several diseases, ensuring stable yields and reducing the need for chemical plant protection measures.
Moreover, Josefin is characterized by good agronomic traits, including optimal spike length, grain number, and grain mass per main spike, which contribute to high productivity. These qualities make the variety attractive for cultivation in the central forest-steppe region of Ukraine, ensuring a combination of disease resistance and high yield.
