Since 2012, the variety Sample has been the national standard of Ukraine.
Originator — Institute of Plant Industry named after V. Ya. Yuryev, NAAN.
Variety characteristics. Variety type — submedicum. Low-growing, plant height 61 — 78 cm. Strong anthocyanic coloration of awns tips, awns long, serrated only at the upper part. Two-rowed ear, with moderate waxy coating, cylindrical, loose (11.5 nodes per 4 cm), medium length (7.6 cm). Sterile spike parallel to the rachis. Flower bracts finely wrinkled, with weakly expressed venation, gradually transitioning into awn. Grain ellipsoidal, yellow, glabrous. Main awn long-haired. 1000-grain weight 48 — 52 g.
Biological characteristics. Maturity group — medium-early, vegetation period 87 — 94 days. Resistant to lodging (8.2 — 9.0 points) and drought (9.0 points). The variety is a source of resistance to powdery mildew (7 — 8 points) and rust (9 points).
Agronomic characteristics. Intensive type variety. Recommended seeding rate 4.0 — 4.5 million viable seeds per hectare. Standard agronomy for the cultivation zone, early sowing.
In production conditions, yield of the variety reached 6.13 t/ha (Volchansk DSSD, Kharkiv region) and 8.13 t/ha ("Agrofirm Dzhulinka", Vinnytsia region). Even under very dry conditions, yield of Sample at Sumsky IAP was 5.19 t/ha. Potential yield 9.5 — 10.5 t/ha. Protein content in grain 12.0 — 15.0%. Percentage of clean seed 75 — 85%.
