A 2025 Breeding Breakthrough: "Sychovyk" Barley

The 2025 State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine includes the new spring barley "Sychovyk," a product of extensive breeding efforts by the V.Ya. Yuriev Institute of Plant Production of the NAAS. Developed through complex breeding methods, this variety offers a modern solution for farmers focused on achieving stable grain yields across all climatic zones of the country.

Adaptability and Geography

"Sychovyk" is officially recommended for cultivation in the Steppe, Forest-Steppe, and Polissya regions. This broad geographical range confirms the hybrid's high plasticity and ability to adapt to diverse soil and climatic conditions. In the context of Ukraine's changing climate, the ability of a variety to deliver predictable results from the southern steppes to the northern regions is a key advantage for agricultural enterprises with dispersed land holdings.

Morphological Characteristics

According to UPOV-based descriptions, "Sychovyk" exhibits specific traits that define its development:

• Development type: Spring, with a semi-erect bush habit.
• Spike: Two-rowed, pyramidal shape, medium density. It features long awns with intense anthocyanin coloration at the tips.
• Grain: Elliptical shape with a coarsely wrinkled surface of the lemma.
• Development: Medium heading time, allowing the variety to efficiently utilize moisture during the spring-summer period.

The V.Ya. Yuriev Institute traditionally focuses on creating technologically advanced varieties. "Sychovyk" is no exception: a moderate waxy bloom on the flag leaf sheath and a balanced plant height ensure lodging resistance and facilitate the harvesting process.
