Description
Agronomy and Production Potential of 'Podilskyi-50' Barley
Registered in 2025, the 'Podilskyi-50' spring barley, developed by the Institute of Fodder and Agriculture of Podillia (NAAS), is a complex hybrid engineered for high performance across Ukraine’s diverse agro-climatic zones, including the Steppe, Forest-Steppe, and Polissia regions. Achieving the genetic potential of this variety requires precise adherence to agronomic practices.
Cultivation Guidelines
- Sowing Strategy: As a spring-type crop, 'Podilskyi-50' requires early sowing as soon as soil conditions allow (soil temperature of +3°C to +5°C). Early establishment is vital to ensure optimal tillering and to avoid heat stress during the grain-filling stage.
- Soil Requirements: The hybrid shows excellent plasticity, performing best on fertile, well-structured soils with a neutral pH (6.5–7.5). Proper soil preparation is essential to support the development of its medium-length stems.
- Crop Management: During the stem elongation and heading phases, balanced nitrogen fertilization is recommended to support the development of the pyramidal, medium-density ears. Weed control is critical during the early tillering phase to prevent competition.
Morphologically, the variety is characterized by a horizontal ear position and long awns with intense anthocyanin coloration at the tips. The grain is elliptical and hulled, with a coarsely wrinkled surface. When harvesting, it is important to calibrate the combine settings carefully to account for the specific structure of the ear and the hulled nature of the grain, ensuring minimal mechanical damage and high grain quality.
