Agrotechnological Potential of Spring Barley "Obrii Nosivshchyny"

The 2025 selection novelty from the Nosivska Breeding and Research Station of the V.M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat (NAAS of Ukraine), spring barley "Obrii Nosivshchyny" is a complex hybrid adapted to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions in Ukraine. The variety demonstrates high plasticity in the Steppe, Forest-Steppe, and Polissia zones.

Cultivation Recommendations

To realize the genetic yield potential, intensive cultivation technology must be followed:

• Sowing dates: The earliest possible sowing is optimal as soon as the soil is physically ready for cultivation. This allows plants to effectively utilize winter-spring moisture reserves before critical temperatures occur.
• Seeding rate: Given the tillering capacity and morphological features (semi-prostrate habit), it is recommended to maintain a stand density that ensures an optimal feeding area. For commercial fields, a target of 4.0–4.5 million viable seeds per hectare is recommended.
• Soil requirements: The variety is responsive to fertile soils with a neutral pH. On the lighter soils of Polissia, balanced doses of NPK fertilizers are required.

Care by Development Phases

"Obrii Nosivshchyny" is characterized by a medium heading time. During the tillering phase, weed control is critical, as the variety shows moderate intensity of anthocyanin coloration of the auricles, which is a marker of active metabolism. During the stem elongation and heading phases, attention must be paid to protection against foliar diseases, considering the dense, pyramidal structure of the ear. A strong waxy bloom on the flag leaf sheath provides additional resistance to short-term drought conditions typical of the steppe zone.

Harvesting should be carried out in a timely manner upon reaching full grain maturity, keeping in mind that the long awns may contribute to shattering if left standing too long.
