MIP Charm is a high-quality Ukrainian barley variety, primarily intended for brewing. It was developed at the Myronivs’k Institute of Wheat named after V. M. Remesla, NAAN, through individual selection from a hybrid population obtained by crossing two Western European varieties, Vivaldi and Ebson. The variety is homozygous and belongs to the var. nutans Schubl. type. Registered in 2019, it exhibits high yield potential, exceeding 8.7 t/ha, as confirmed by competitive trials and state qualification evaluations across various agro-climatic zones of Ukraine — Steppes, Forest-Steppe, and Polissia.
MIP Charm has a medium-early maturity period, allowing it to ripen 5–7 days earlier than late-maturing Western varieties. Plants have a medium height of 65–70 cm with strong stems, providing high resistance to lodging (8–9 points). The variety demonstrates high drought tolerance, outperforming analogs by 0.7–1.5 t/ha in dry years. Additionally, it exhibits very high resistance to powdery mildew, controlled by the mlo11 genes, and shows good resistance to rust, helminthosporiosis, and lodging.
The quality of malt obtained from MIP Charm has been confirmed by three-year trials at a malt house. Indicators include total protein content 10.5%, soluble protein 5.8%, moisture 4.2%, extract 82.5%, diastatic power 332 W-K units, and minimum glassiness 0.1%. The recommended seeding rate is 3.0–4.0 million germinated seeds per hectare. The variety is suitable for cultivation in the Steppes, Forest-Steppe, and Polissia zones, making it a versatile and profitable choice for agricultural producers focused on high-quality brewing barley production.
