Marian

The barley variety Marian was developed by the Nosovskaya Selection and Research Station and was included in the State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Distribution in Ukraine in 2020. This variety is intended for cultivation in the forest-steppe and Polesie regions, confirming its adaptation to the climatic conditions of northern Ukraine. The vegetation period ranges from 81 to 89 days, which falls within the medium-early maturation category. Plant height varies from 59.9 to 72.5 cm, facilitating harvesting and resistance to lodging.

The Marian variety is characterized by high resistance to various adverse factors. It exhibits lodging resistance of 7-8 points, shattering resistance of 8-9 points, and drought resistance of 7-8 points. Additionally, the variety is resistant to major barley diseases such as powdery mildew (8 points), rust (8-9 points), and helminthosporium (8 points). It also demonstrates high resistance to stem borers (8-9 points), which contributes to maintaining yield and reducing losses during storage.

Marian is intended for grain and fodder use and shows high productivity. The potential yield reaches 7 tons per hectare (or 70 c/ha), while the average yield is around 50 c/ha. A key feature is the protein content in the grain at 12.8-13.6 %, ensuring good quality fodder material. The 1000-grain weight is 45-52 grams, and the grain density is 680 g/l, indicating high quality and uniformity of the product. High grain uniformity (93.4-93.8 %) simplifies technological processes during processing and storage.
