Barley Rut

German breeding for consistent yields

The spring barley variety "Ruth" is the result of extensive breeding expertise from the German company Nordsaat Saatzucht. Developed in collaboration with the Granskevitz breeding station and Dr. Steffen Beuch, this variety is engineered to deliver predictable results in temperate climates. In the European market, barley from Nordsaat has long been regarded as a "workhorse" variety, shifting the focus from purely maximum yield potential to biological reliability and field performance.

Biological traits and field performance

"Ruth" is a two-row spring barley variety, valued by growers for its compactness and uniform crop development. With a plant height of 60–70 cm, the variety exhibits excellent lodging resistance, which simplifies the harvesting process and minimizes grain losses. Its shorter straw profile allows for an efficient allocation of nutrients toward the development of the ear.

• Vegetation period: 90–100 days. This cycle allows "Ruth" to mature successfully even in regions with shorter growing seasons.
• Phytosanitary profile: One of the variety's strongest assets is its genetic resistance to key pathogens. "Ruth" demonstrates high resistance to Helminthosporium, net blotch, and powdery mildew. This allows agronomists to optimize their fungicide programs, reducing the frequency of scheduled treatments without compromising yield security.

Choosing the "Ruth" variety from Nordsaat Saatzucht is a strategic move for operations that prioritize intensive management practices with controlled risks. Due to its adaptability across different soil types, this German variety remains highly sought after in the professional crop production sector, ensuring stable grain quality that meets modern market standards.
