Technological potential of 'Svitoh' barley

Developed by the V. Ya. Yuriev Plant Production Institute of the NAAS, this barley variety is a breeding solution tailored for farmers focused on stable yields under the volatile climatic conditions of Ukraine. Classified as spring barley, it exhibits balanced morphophysiological traits essential for commercial-scale cultivation.

Morphology and vegetation dynamics

Short-stemmed architecture is a key structural feature of the 'Svitoh' variety. A plant height of 60–70 cm significantly reduces lodging risks during intensive cultivation practices, which is critical for maintaining grain quality during mechanized harvesting. The 80–90 day vegetation period allows the crop to effectively utilize early spring moisture, minimizing the impact of summer drought.

Phytosanitary resistance and grain quality

The genetic framework of the variety is adapted to resist complex pathogen pressures. 'Svitoh' demonstrates pronounced resistance to:

• Helminthosporiosis;
• Rust (including resistance to leaf rust);
• Powdery mildew.

This lowers the fungicide load on crops, allowing for optimized crop protection expenditure. An important production indicator is the thousand-kernel weight, ranging from 40 to 50 grams depending on seasonal conditions. The high specific weight of the seeds, combined with a 12% nitrogenous substance content in the dry matter, makes this variety attractive for fodder production and the compound feed industry.

Operational parameters

Cold tolerance ratings (7–8 points) for spring barley confirm the variety's high adaptive potential during early sowing windows, when late spring frosts are possible. The efficiency of 'Svitoh' lies in its yield predictability when adhering to mineral fertilization protocols, making it a reliable asset in any crop rotation system.
