Native to the mountainous regions of Mexico and South Texas, this species thrives in warm climates. In terms of cultivation, it requires a sunny, sheltered spot protected from heavy winds. While moderately hardy, it requires winter protection in regions where temperatures frequently drop below freezing.

Soil requirements for James' sage are specific: excellent drainage is paramount. The plant is highly susceptible to root rot if placed in heavy, waterlogged clay. It prefers light, sandy or loamy soils with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH level, mimicking its natural rocky habitat.

Botanically, it forms a bushy, branching structure, reaching 60-90 cm in height, covered in small, fragrant, ovate leaves. The flowers, appearing from late spring until the first autumn frosts, provide a wide range of colors, making it an essential choice for colorful landscape displays.
