To cultivate these cacti successfully, high levels of sunlight are mandatory. In indoor settings, south-facing windows or supplemental LED grow lights are necessary to maintain the plant's natural morphology and prevent etiolation, which is a common stress reaction in low-light environments.

The substrate must be extremely well-draining. A typical potting mix should consist of inorganic components such as pumice, perlite, and coarse sand. Organic matter, like peat or compost, should be kept to an absolute minimum to prevent the substrate from staying damp for too long.

Climate management is crucial for the survival of Pygmaeocereus. During the growing season, they thrive in warm temperatures with good airflow.
