The Walnut is a large tree up to 25 meters tall from the Juglandaceae family, native to Central and Middle Asia as well as some areas of the Caucasus. Its fruits are consumed both fresh and when ripe; the kernels of ripe walnuts contain up to 21% protein and up to 75% oil rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.
The nutritional value of the walnut is high: the kernel contains vitamins, minerals (iron, cobalt), tannins, and fiber. Because of this, the product is often recommended for the prevention of atherosclerosis, improvement of cardiovascular system function, support of the nervous and digestive systems, as well as an energy source during physical exhaustion.
In terms of economic value, walnut trees are valued not only for their nuts. Their large crowns provide shade in the hot summer, and the wood is used in construction, furniture production, and musical instruments. In folk culture, the walnut is considered a symbol of longevity and well-being; it is often given as a gift and used in traditional dishes.
