English Walnut «Pelans» – a high-yielding and early-fruiting variety obtained at the North-Caucasus Regional Research Institute of Pomology and Viticulture. The trees reach 10–12 m in height, have a dense, rounded crown and straight branches, which ensures good ventilation and light access to the fruits.
The fruit of the variety is of medium size (about 9.5 g), elongated, slightly ribbed, with a thin shell. Kernel content reaches up to 60%, fat content is 68.2%, and protein is 15.2%. These indicators make «Pelans» a universal product for both the food industry and home consumption.
The variety is characterized by high winter hardiness, drought and frost resistance, as well as resistance to common diseases and pests. The yield from one tree is approximately 5.1 kg, which translates to 4.2 c/ha. For maximum productivity, it is recommended to plant four varieties together, including «Urozhainyi», «Zarya Vostoka» and «Sovkhoznii». The harvest period falls in the last decade of September, and the tree begins to bear fruit just four years after planting.
