Common walnut Orion

Practical insights on growing «Orion» walnut

When starting a walnut orchard, predictability is your best asset. The «Orion» variety, developed by Maina Kuzminichna Ulyukina, is essentially a workhorse. It is a vigorous tree that demands space; plan your layout with at least 8x8 meters between saplings to avoid canopy overcrowding after the first decade of growth.

Disease resistance and maintenance

Bacterial spot is the bane of any walnut grower, capable of ruining a harvest in weeks. However, «Orion» shows remarkable resistance to these pathogens. While preventive copper-based sprays remain a standard practice, this hybrid requires significantly less chemical intervention than many traditional varieties. This isn't just about saving on fungicide costs; it’s about reducing the time and labor spent in the orchard.

Harvest and fruit quality

The nuts are elliptical in shape and substantial in size (15-20 cm in circumference). The brown kernel shell is easy to handle, and the kernels remain intact upon cracking, which is a major advantage for marketability. With a medium-thickness shell, the fruit stores well; if properly cured, the nuts maintain their taste and texture well into spring without drying out or turning rancid.

• Growth management: The tree is highly vigorous and requires annual pruning to keep its size in check and ensure sunlight reaches the interior branches.
• Watering: Keep an eye on soil moisture during fruit set; excessive drought can lead to premature drop.
• Hardiness: The variety recovers well after harsh winters, and the shoots typically mature at the right time.

If you are looking for a variety that doesn't demand constant daily maintenance but offers a reliable yield of high-quality nuts, «Orion» is a solid choice. It is a well-researched selection by Maina Ulyukina, Mikhail Veresin, and Alexander Eshchenko, designed for durability and consistent performance rather than just aesthetic appeal.
