ORION – a new hazelnut variety of Moldovan selection, distinguished by high yield and large fruits weighing from 17.5 to 19.5 grams. The fruits have a correct oval shape, a light kernel that easily detaches from the shell, and the brown color of the nut gives it an attractive appearance. The variety ripens at the end of September – beginning of October, which allows planning the harvest in advance.
The ORION tree is characterized by moderate frost hardiness and good resistance to diseases, including marsonia and bacterial spot. The root system is closed, and the plant is tall and sun-loving, making it suitable for planting in both spring and autumn. For optimal growth, it is recommended to plant in a sunny area in moderately moist, loam-carbonate soils with good drainage.
Yield reaches 130–140 kg per tree in the best years (15–20 years), and fruiting begins as early as the 4th–6th year. The variety responds well to fertilization, which allows maintaining a high level of production. Thanks to high drought hardiness and frost hardiness, ORION is suitable for cultivation in both moderate climate regions and more severe conditions, ensuring a stable income and high product quality.
