Vegetable Pea MEDION

Stable Yields from Hungarian Breeding

The 'Medion' pea variety, developed by the Hungarian research institute Zki Zoldsegtermesztesi Kutato Intezet Zrt, is the choice for growers prioritizing predictability and plant resilience. This vegetable pea is a mid-season crop with a vegetation period of 70–80 days. Its key distinguishing feature lies in its breeding: 'Medion' possesses strong genetic resistance to powdery mildew, which is critical for achieving a marketable harvest without excessive fungicide applications.

Agronomic Characteristics

• Pod Size: The pods reach a length of 7–8 cm and contain 7–8 high-quality, medium-sized peas.
• Thousand Seed Weight: 340–360 grams, ensuring excellent germination rates and seedling vigor.

Unlike ultra-early varieties that often lose quality during moisture fluctuations, 'Medion' demonstrates balanced development. Its medium-seed type makes it a versatile solution for both fresh market sales and processing (freezing or canning). A major strength of this variety is the high uniformity of its pods, which simplifies mechanical harvesting and sorting processes.

Who should consider 'Medion'? Primarily, commercial farms seeking a balance between crop protection and appropriate maturity dates. While the variety requires a good agrotechnical background, consistent compliance with sowing and irrigation guidelines yields a stable volume of high-quality produce. ZKI's Hungarian breeding is traditionally known for its adaptability to the European climate, making 'Medion' an excellent performer on soils prone to typical fungal diseases during the active fruiting stage.
