Field pea Somerwood

Genetic Protection and Productivity: Assessing the Somerwood Potential

The Somerwood pea by Syngenta is an intensive vegetable hybrid designed for producers focused on high-quality, large-seed yield. The technological advantage of this variety lies in the balance between its vegetative period (60–70 days) and its pod morphology.

Agrotechnical Characteristics and Morphology

The key driver of yield here is the high filling density of the pod. With a length of 9–10 cm, the plant efficiently forms 7–8 peas per pod. The thousand-seed weight ranges from 200 to 220 grams, classifying this material as a large-seeded variety. This calibration ensures excellent marketability for processing and freezing industries.

Phytosanitary Resistance as a Risk Mitigation Tool

Syngenta’s systematic approach to genetics has allowed for the integration of robust defense mechanisms into Somerwood:

• Fusarium Wilt Resistance: The plant's root system is adapted to common soil-borne pathogens, which is critical for preventing crop loss during early and mid-stage development.
• Powdery Mildew Immunity: Eliminating the need for excessive fungicidal treatments against this fungus allows for lower crop protection costs and cleaner raw materials.
• Pathogen Load Control: The hybrid exhibits high tolerance to a complex of diseases affecting sowing peas, minimizing the risk of pod damage.

Choosing Somerwood is an effective strategy for farms where predictable maturation timelines and efficient mechanical harvesting are top priorities. The hybrid’s genetic potential allows it to effectively utilize moisture during the grain-filling stage, maximizing the output of commercial-grade produce.
