Tulip California Sun

A Vibrant Spring Accent: 'California Sun' Greigii Tulip

The 'California Sun' variety stands out among Greigii tulips for its non-trivial coloration. These are not merely red flowers: the petals blend deep crimson with subtle lilac hues, creating a dynamic color-shifting effect. Due to its dwarf habit, this tulip is the ideal solution for the foreground of flower beds, rock gardens, and container planting, where taller varieties would appear cumbersome.

Agricultural Advantages

The main strength of this hybrid is its immunity. Unlike many early and mid-season tulips, 'California Sun' possesses robust resistance to the most destructive bulb diseases:

• Verticillium wilt;
• Fusarium wilt;
• Tobacco mosaic virus.

This natural resistance makes it a smart choice for gardeners who struggle with soil pathogens and want to avoid constant fungicide applications. Its mid-season bloom window allows for a seamless transition from early spring ephemerals to later perennial flowers.

Who is this variety for?

If you are looking for a tulip that won't flop in the wind and doesn't require frequent replanting due to degeneration, 'California Sun' is your best bet. Its greatest strength lies in the density of its stems and the ornamental quality of its leaves, which often display the characteristic mottled pattern typical of the Greigii group. Its limitation is its short stature, making it less suitable for cut flower bouquets; however, it thrives exceptionally well in open ground and borders.
