Tulip Calypso

A Compact Accent for the Spring Garden

The Greigii tulip 'Calypso' is the go-to choice for those seeking a balance between natural resilience and the vibrant allure of salmon hues. Unlike tall, leggy hybrids that often require staking to survive gusty spring winds, this variety maintains its structural integrity and neat posture throughout its blooming cycle.

Why choose 'Calypso'?

• Low-growing advantage: Its compact height makes it an ideal candidate for edging, rock gardens, and container planting.
• Color expression: The salmon coloration offers a sophisticated alternative to standard reds and yellows, providing a unique visual depth.
• The Greigii heritage: 'Calypso' features the signature wide leaves of its class, often adorned with purple mottling or stripes, making the foliage ornamental even before the buds open.

Cultivation Insights

As a mid-season bloomer, 'Calypso' serves as a perfect bridge between early botanical tulips and later-flowering Darwin hybrids. However, success depends on placement: Greigii tulips reach their peak potential only in full sun. In deep shade, buds may fail to fully expand, and the stems risk stretching unnaturally.

Strengths: High resistance to tulip breaking virus, excellent winter hardiness, and reliable multiplication in temperate climates.

Weaknesses: Sensitivity to waterlogged soil. In areas with high water tables, adding a drainage layer during planting is essential; otherwise, the bulbs are highly susceptible to rot.

For landscape professionals building dense floral carpets, 'Calypso' provides exactly what is needed: a low-profile plant with high color saturation and a long-lasting decorative impact that doesn't sacrifice stability for aesthetics.
