Alkid winter triticale is a variety developed by the All-Ukrainian Scientific Institute of Selection and registered in 2006. It is recommended for cultivation in various agro-climatic zones of Ukraine, including the Polissia, Forest-Steppe, and Steppe regions. The variety has a medium-maturing vegetation period of 284–300 days, a low-growing plant type (104–113 cm), and a strong hollow stem with moderately hairy upper internodes. The ear has a grayish-smoky color, pyramidal shape, and loose structure, while the grain is yellow-white, large, elongated, and wrinkled, with a 1000-grain weight of 46–54 grams. The Alkid variety is characterized by high winter hardiness, exceeding the average level and rated 8.6–9.0 points in field conditions. It also exhibits good resistance to lodging (7.5–8.2 points), shattering (8.8–9.0 points), and drought (8.8 points). During testing years, the variety was rarely affected by major diseases, indicating enhanced disease resistance. The grain contains 13.0–13.2% protein, indicating high product quality. The yield of this variety in different zones ranges from 58.3 to 65.5 c/ha, with a guaranteed yield increase of 7.3–9.6 c/ha. Triticale as a crop has several advantages compared to wheat: it better withstands cold, drought, and saline soils, possesses a more developed root system, ensuring enhanced drought resistance. The critical freezing temperature for triticale plants is -18…-20 °C, which is higher than that of wheat. Plants are also more resistant to ice crust and frost, and recover faster in spring. Triticale is used both for grain production, which can be utilized in compound feed or for producing food flour, and for green feed, especially silage and hay. This variety is well-adapted to various soil types, including chernozems, sandy, and peaty soils, and under proper agronomic practices, ensures high yields.
