Tradescantia – a perennial vine of the Commelinaceae family, with about thirty varieties in the genus. The plant is characterized by flexible stems and diverse leaf coloring: from smooth dark green to silver-white with stripes, as in the varieties 'Albovittata', 'Laekenensis', and 'Aurea'. The height of most species ranges from 30–60 cm, although some varieties can reach over a meter. Thanks to its compact growth and bright green foliage, tradescantia is often used as an ampelous plant for pots, planters, or as a ground cover.
Traditionally, the plant is grown on high shelves or in hanging planters, allowing the stems to develop freely. Regular pinching promotes a dense bush with numerous branches and also stimulates the appearance of new shoots. Tradescantia is easy to reproduce both by seeds and vegetatively: cuttings placed in water, with regular fertilization, can last for several months.
The key advantage of tradescantia is its ability to purify indoor air of harmful substances and electromagnetic noise. The plant prefers moderate watering but does not tolerate waterlogging; with proper care, it is drought-resistant and can survive winter without shelter. Tradescantia is also valued in landscape design: it is used for borders, flower beds, along streams or ponds, as well as near grasses and ornamental plants.
