Tradescantia "Northern Light" – is a perennial herbaceous plant reaching a height of 55–75 cm and possessing a medium-compact form. Leaves are linear-lanceolate, light green with a slight fuzz, about 30–35 cm long, while stems are bright green with anthocyanin veins at the base of leaves during spring growth.
Stems are strong and long (10–12 cm), each having 2–3 lateral stems. Inflorescences are simple, umbelliform, with a diameter of 6–8 cm, located in the apical part of the plant. Inside the inflorescence are from 20 to 30 buds, with usually 1–3 blooming simultaneously. Flowers are triangular-round in shape, with a diameter of about 4 cm, with rounded petal edges and medium pleating. Flower coloration is tender blue with a slight pinkish tint, and anthers are yellow.
The plant is characterized by a moderate flowering duration – from mid-summer to autumn, while maintaining decorativeness even under severe frost conditions. "Northern Light" is easily propagated by cuttings in spring, summer, and autumn, making it a popular choice for hanging plants. Despite the fact that the plant grows quickly and may lose its decorativeness within a year or two under unfavorable conditions, it remains undemanding and disease-resistant, although leaves and flowers may occasionally be damaged by slugs.
Tradescantia is excellent for greening both in open gardens and in rooms with varying levels of illumination. Under poor lighting, leaves lose the brightness of their color, yet the plant remains alive and continues to bloom. Thanks to its compact form and dense bush, "Northern Light" can serve as a connecting crop between various plants, creating cozy corners in garden compositions.
