Focus on long-term productivity: 'Pidhiryanka' Timothy grass

In the context of intensive fodder production, the choice of perennial grasses is often limited to imported selections. However, the domestic 'Pidhiryanka' variety from the Institute of Plant Science of the NAAS of Ukraine demonstrates the true strength of Ukrainian genetics. This Timothy grass variety is a prime example of a crop focused on creating high-quality hay and pasture foundations with an emphasis on long-term yield stability.

Agronomic advantages

• Winter hardiness and adaptability: Bred specifically for Ukraine's climate, this variety ensures high survival rates during fluctuating thaws and sharp frosts, conditions that often prove fatal for many European hybrids.
• Regrowth intensity: 'Pidhiryanka' is characterized by vigorous spring regrowth and the ability to recover rapidly after grazing or mowing, which allows for efficient planning of rotational livestock grazing.
• Nutritional value: The crop maintains stable protein accumulation during the heading phase, making it an excellent component for haylage mixtures and high-protein hay production.

Limitations and recommendations

The main challenge when working with this variety lies in its moisture requirements. Like most Timothy grass varieties, 'Pidhiryanka' does not perform well during prolonged droughts on light soils. Therefore, its full potential is best realized on floodplain meadows or under irrigation. It is ideally suited for dairy farms requiring a predictable, high-quality forage supply over a 4–6 year period of stand utilization.
