Timothy Pirnivchanka – a meadow timothy variety widely distributed in the forest-steppe and steppe zones of the country. The plant is characterized by cold hardiness: seeds germinate at 1–2 °C, and growth begins at 5–6 °C. Pirnivchanka grows well on clay, moist soils but also adapts to peatlands and acidic soils. Sowing is not recommended on dry sandy soils.
Field preparation involves weed control and manure application (30 t/ha). With early spring sowing, the soil is loosened to 25 cm, and seeds are sown at a depth of 2 cm with a row spacing of no less than 60 cm. In the first year, growth is slow, but full development is achieved by the second year. Hay yield can reach up to 10 t/ha, with germination rates around 96%. Timothy hay dries easily and is well eaten by animals.
Pirnivchanka demonstrates resistance to excess moisture and low temperatures, but is sensitive to drought and prolonged shade. With proper fertilization, the plant not only maintains yield under high nitrogen rates but also increases it. The optimal growth regime is 15–20 °C, and the growing season lasts from 80 to 130 days. Thanks to these characteristics, Pirnivchanka is a reliable choice for hay and feed production on fields with low mineral content.
