Sudan grass (Sorghum xdrummondii) – an annual grass grown as a fodder crop. It has a mild taste and pleasant aroma, making it attractive to cows, horses, sheep, and other animals. In its green form, the grass contains a large amount of nutrients: sugar, proteins (about 7.5 kg per 100 kg of dry matter), ash, vitamins, and minerals.
The crop is characterized by high resilience and easy care. Sudan grass grows successfully even on poor soils and under conditions of short daylight hours, which allows obtaining excellent yields: up to 35–40 tons of green feed and about 10 tons of hay per hectare. During summer, up to five cuts can be made, harvesting more than 1000 centners of grass per hectare.
Sudan grass is suitable for various forms of preparation: green mass, hay, silage, and ensilage. The bush is upright and bushy, the stem is of medium length, the leaves are of medium width and length. The seeds are elliptical and light brown. Due to its characteristics, it is popular among farmers as a reliable source of fodder mass.
