The sorghum variety "Odessa Early" is a high-yield grain hybrid with early maturity, developed by U.S. breeding and certified to OECD standards. The vegetation period ranges from 100 to 110 days, enabling early planting due to the seeds' ability to germinate in relatively cool soil, which helps retain moisture in the topsoil layers. Plants reach a height of 1.0 to 1.25 meters, have thick stems with a diameter of 25-30 mm, and broad leaves with dark gray veins. The panicle is erect, 10-12 cm long, and semi-transparent, facilitating mechanized harvesting.
The hybrid exhibits high resistance to major diseases such as rust and bacterial blight, as well as pests including aphids of biotypes "A" and "C". The variety is drought-tolerant and lodging-resistant, making it suitable for cultivation throughout Ukraine. The grain is red and orange, large, with a 1000-grain weight of 24 to 28 g. Protein content in the grain reaches 13-13.6%, starch — 69-74%, and fat — about 3-4.5%. The milling yield is 80-85%, an important indicator for processing.
The potential yield of this variety exceeds 100 centners per hectare, while actual yields in Ukraine range from 32 to 39 centners per hectare. The variety is recommended for use in grain, starch, and alcohol production, expanding its application in the agro-industrial complex. The recommended seeding rate is 120-180 thousand seeds per hectare, ensuring optimal productive tillering (2-3 tillers) and high yield. Due to its characteristics, "Odessa Early" is a promising choice for farmers seeking stable and high sorghum yields.
