Originator — Institute of Plant Breeding named after V. Ya. Yuryev, NAAN.
Variety distinguishing features. Variety — lucida (lucida). Plants are tall (110-130 cm), well-branched, semi-compact with a thick central stem. Pubescence is white with a grayish tint, flowers are white, seeds are spherical, yellow, hilum color matches the seed coat, 1000-seed mass is 160-170 g.
Biological characteristics. The variety belongs to the mid-season group by vegetative period duration (110-115 days), has increased drought resistance, resistant to lodging (8.0-9.0 points), seed shattering (8.0-9.0 points), pathogens and pests (8.0 points), has high attachment of lower pods (15-18 cm), suitable for mechanical harvesting.
Agronomic characteristics. Recommended seeding rate — 0.6-0.7 million viable seeds per hectare. Seeding method — conventional row or wide-row (row spacing 45 cm). Agronomy of the variety is standard for the growing zone.
In the competitive variety trial conducted by the Institute of Plant Breeding named after V. Ya. Yuryev (2001-2003) the yield was 2.9 t/ha. In production conditions in Kharkiv region in 2005, yields of 3.0 t/ha of seeds were obtained. In Kherson region (Institute of Irrigated Agriculture) in 2011, the yield was 2.82 t/ha. Potential yield — 3.5-4.0 t/ha, protein content in seeds — 39-40%, oil — 23-24%.
The variety Skala can be used for producing green and rough feeds, both in pure stands and in intercropping with barley or corn.
