Winter barley Zdobutok

Breeding Legacy from the V. Ya. Yuriev Institute

The «Zdobutok» barley variety is a product of long-term breeding efforts by the Kharkiv school of the V. Ya. Yuriev Plant Production Institute (NAAS). Developed to meet the demand for stable and high-yielding crops, this variety has established a strong presence in the two-row barley segment. Although its genetic background is oriented toward spring-type development, its remarkable adaptability allows agronomists to effectively leverage its potential across various climatic zones in Ukraine.

Agronomic Potential and Morphology

«Zdobutok» demonstrates balanced morphological traits, making it suitable for intensive cultivation technologies:

• Plant height: moderate, ranging from 70–80 cm, which reduces the risk of lodging.
• Spike type: two-row, highly valued for producing large, uniform grain.
• Vegetation period: 100–110 days, classifying it as a mid-ripening variety that fits perfectly into crop rotations requiring early field activity.
• 1,000-seed weight: 50–52 grams, indicating high grain filling quality.
• Protein content: nitrogenous substance content reaches 12%, ensuring high grain quality for processing purposes.

Protection and Winter Hardiness

One of the key characteristics of «Zdobutok» is its resilience against adverse environmental conditions. Its winter hardiness score of 8 out of 9 points sets it apart from many competitors, allowing for minimized losses even during sharp temperature fluctuations. Furthermore, the variety possesses clear genetic resistance to a wide range of pathogens, including covered, loose, and stem smut, which significantly reduces the burden on chemical plant protection systems.

Choosing «Zdobutok» is an investment in a predictable harvest with high grain quality, backed by the authority of Ukrainian academic breeding.
