Winter barley Viklik

Yuryev Institute Selection: Resilience at the Core

The 'Vyklyk' barley variety is a testament to the breeding expertise of the V. Y. Yuryev Plant Production Institute, designed specifically to thrive within the demanding agricultural landscape of Ukraine. In an era of unpredictable weather patterns, this variety offers growers a robust solution. Its standout feature is an exceptional winter hardiness rating of 9, providing farmers with peace of mind in regions prone to harsh temperature fluctuations and overwintering challenges.

Agronomic Profile and Yield Performance

Although classified as a spring barley type, 'Vyklyk' has gained a reputation for its versatility and adaptability when utilized in winter cropping systems. The plant maintains a manageable height of 60–70 cm, which significantly reduces the risk of lodging. The two-row ear structure produces large, high-quality grains, with a 1,000-seed weight reaching 48–50 grams, ensuring strong commodity value for the harvest.

Disease Resistance and Vegetative Cycle

Economic efficiency is baked into the genetics of 'Vyklyk.' It possesses a strong natural defense against common foliar pathogens, specifically:

• Helminthosporiosis;
• Mycosphaerella leaf blotch;
• Brown spot.

By minimizing the incidence of these diseases, farmers can optimize their fungicide application schedules. With a maturity window of 100–110 days, the variety effectively utilizes seasonal soil moisture, ensuring steady grain filling and consistent yields even in seasons marked by rapid onset of summer heat.
