The Sultan pear is a winter variety developed at the Sverdlovsk Horticultural Breeding Station. Trees of this variety are tall with a wide pyramidal canopy of medium density. The fruits are characterized by their large size, weighing from 145 to 250 grams, and have a round or broadly pear-shaped form with smooth and dense skin. The main color of the fruits is yellow with a bright orange or reddish blush, giving them an attractive appearance. The flesh is creamy or white, juicy and firm, with a sweet-sour, unsaturated taste and a refreshing acidity, practically without granulation.
The Sultan variety is distinguished by high yield and good winter hardiness, which allows it to be grown in the Urals. The fruits ripen in the first half of October and can be stored until the end of January under proper storage conditions, making this variety especially valuable for long-term use. Pears are transportable and maintain their taste qualities for a long time. For stable fruiting, trees require pollinators, as the variety is partially self-fertile.
The variety is resistant to scab and has good resistance to diseases such as septoria and entomosporeosis. However, damage by gray mold, spotting, powdery mildew, as well as pests, including flower weevil, aphids, codling moth, and spider mites, is possible. Thanks to the combination of high adaptability, disease resistance, and fruit quality, the Sultan pear is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking to obtain large, tasty, and long-lasting fruits.
