Developed by the V. Ya. Yuriev Plant Production Institute, the Otaman variety is a prime example of specialized breeding for intensive agricultural systems. Its design focuses on minimizing harvest losses and maximizing operational efficiency.

Morphology and Physiology

The defining feature of Otaman is its morphology: it is a leafless (semi-leafless/tendrilled) type. Instead of standard leaves, the plant features tendrils, which provides two significant engineering advantages:

• Lodging Resistance: The tendrils lock the plants together, creating a stable, upright stand that resists flattening even under adverse weather conditions.
• Improved Aeration: Reduced foliage density enhances airflow within the crop canopy, significantly lowering the risk of fungal disease development.

The semi-dwarf habit, combined with a medium plant height, allows for optimal distribution of photosynthetic energy, focusing resources directly on pod production. With a growth cycle of 70–80 days, the variety fits perfectly into crop rotations requiring early field clearance.

Productivity Metrics

Technically, the variety is focused on grain production. The Thousand Kernel Weight (TKW) ranges from 240 to 260 grams, indicating high seed development. A protein content of 20–22% meets standard industry requirements, ensuring market competitiveness both domestically and for export.

Otaman was designed to interface with modern harvesting machinery. Its suitability for direct harvesting is one of its primary assets. The pod resistance to shattering provides agronomists with a flexible harvest window, protecting against yield losses during potential machinery delays.
