Nemchinovskiy 817 is a medium-early field pea (vetch) variety, primarily intended for fodder purposes. Plants of this variety are characterized by a non-shattering type and the absence of leaflets, which facilitates harvesting and reduces crop losses. Plant height varies from 84 to 163 cm, the stem is medium-sized with 18-25 internodes, and the flowers have dark purple wing coloration and pale purple standards. Pods are straight, 6-7 cm long, contain 4-5 seeds with a slightly angular shape, brown color with purple spotting, and characteristic depressions on the surface. The mass of 1000 seeds ranges from 204 to 264 g, cotyledons are yellow, and the hilum is closed by the remnant of the funicle.
The variety is distinguished by high yield: average grain yield in the region reaches 20.7 c/ha, which is 3 c/ha higher than standard varieties, while dry matter yield is 73 c/ha. In the Moscow region, dry matter yield can reach 81.6 c/ha, and maximum dry matter and grain yield indicators were recorded at 157.7 c/ha and 32.2 c/ha, respectively. Nemchinovskiy 817 is drought and waterlogging resistant, as well as well adapted to various climatic conditions. Lodging resistance is at the level of standard varieties, while shattering resistance is above average.
However, the variety has high susceptibility to ascochyta blight and root rots, although seeds are weakly affected. Weevil damage reaches up to 16% of grains. To increase yield, it is recommended to use fertilized winter and hill crops as predecessors, as well as apply fertilizers in the amount of 60-90 kg/ha of P2O5 and K2O locally or with a grain drill. Pre-sowing seed treatment with rhizotorfin and molybdenum preparations (50 g per 1 c of seeds) is effective. Protein content in dry matter is 13.8-24.4%, in grain - 22.7-24.6%. Nemchinovskiy 817 is well suited for mixed sowing with cereal crops such as oats and barley, and is not prone to lodging.
