Onion CHROMA

Italian breeding for long-term storage

The «Chroma» onion from Isi Sementi S.P.A embodies European standards in vegetable production. Italian breeders Boni Angelo have created a product that defies the stereotype that salad onion varieties must spoil quickly. The main value of this hybrid lies in the unique balance between delicate taste characteristics and the ability to maintain marketability for up to 10 months after harvest.

Why choose «Chroma»?

• Storage resilience: While many salad varieties start to sprout or lose firmness by mid-winter, «Chroma» holds up confidently in storage for 9–10 months, making it a strategically important variety for farms focused on off-season sales.
• Gastronomic profile: Classified as a salad type, this onion lacks the aggressive pungency of «sharp» varieties and features a succulent, tender texture highly valued by end consumers and retail chains.
• Uniformity: As a product of Isi Sementi S.P.A, the hybrid offers excellent uniformity in bulb shape and size, significantly simplifying the mechanized harvesting process and post-harvest handling.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The strength of «Chroma» is predictability. Agronomists choose it for the ability to secure a quality crop with a reliable marketable yield. A challenge of working with this variety is the necessity for strict adherence to agrotechnological protocols: like any premium hybrid, «Chroma» requires high-quality nutrition and humidity control to unlock its full storage potential. This onion is optimal for professional farms aiming to avoid price dumping during peak harvest season and capture higher value in the «long» market when prices for high-quality onions reach their peak.
