Alfalfa Margus

Serbian Breeding for High-Yield Forage

The «Margus» alfalfa variety from the Serbian company Superior D.O.O. Za Poljoprivrednu Proizvo is designed for farmers focused on maximizing nutritional value while maintaining stand longevity. In intensive livestock farming, rapid regrowth rates after mowing are critical, and this is where «Margus» outperforms standard varieties.

Key Characteristics and Adaptability

With a plant height reaching 150 cm, the variety provides significant biomass yield per cutting. A key strength of «Margus» is the balanced ratio of leaves to stems. High protein concentration in the foliage makes hay and haylage from this alfalfa an essential component of high-productivity cattle diets.

• Regrowth Rate: The variety shows excellent potential for recovery after mowing, allowing for 4–5 cuts per season under optimal agrotechnical conditions and moisture management.
• Stress Tolerance: Serbian breeding is traditionally focused on continental climates, meaning the variety handles temperature fluctuations and short-term dry spells effectively.
• Root System: A strong taproot allows the plant to efficiently utilize moisture from deeper soil layers, ensuring stable yields even during inconsistent rainfall.

«Margus» is an ideal choice for farms aiming to optimize the cost of high-quality forage production. Its greatest advantage lies in the combination of biological growth potential and strong resistance to common legume diseases. However, it requires careful attention to soil pH; like most intensive alfalfa varieties, «Margus» is sensitive to acidity. Achieving the full 150 cm growth potential is impossible without proper soil liming.
